Energy Justice in the Global South: A Discourse for a Sustainable Future, Oct 2024

© IIT Jodhpur

23 October 2024
At IIT Jodhpur
Hybrid

Open for Bachelor/ Master/ PhD/ Postdoc / Faculty

A fair and sustainable energy transition necessitates sharing the benefits equitably, ensuring that the vulnerable populations do not disproportionately bear the burdens. Moreover, it also requires the establishment of pathways that ensure access to affordable clean energy while supporting communities relying on traditional energy sources.

Nonetheless, the complexity of this transition brings significant uncertainties influenced by political, economic, and technological factors. These uncertainties pose challenges to global cooperation and raise critical questions regarding how various countries, communities, and industries will navigate and manage the energy transition. The Global North and South encounter unique energy justice issues- while the North grapples with concerns related to energy poverty and affordability, the South must focus on ensuring energy access and security.

This workshop examines these challenges by focusing on critical themes such as energy justice, ethics, politics, technology, policy, and governance. The workshop seeks to identify innovative strategies that promote a sustainable and just energy transition for all by fostering dialogue across these areas.

Societal Transformations for a Resilient Future

8 Sep 2022

The symposium aimed to recognise and facilitate synergies amongst researchers and exchange of ideas in the wider fields of humanities and social sciences. It  offered a wide spectrum of inter- and multidisciplinary topics on resilient societies by engaging early career scholars, junior researchers, research fellows and academics.

Resilience – a term often highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic and in current debates surrounding the impact of climate change and violent conflict – constitutes a highly ambiguous concept, one that nevertheless forms one of the most important needs for societies, impacting international conflict and cooperation, national and local politics, individual and household behavior as well as social interaction.

The topics covered were:

  1. (Public) Health, Bodies and Emotions
  2. Poverty, Inequality and Development
  3. Sustainability and Ecological Crises
  4. Governance, Institutions, State-building and State Failure
  5. Crisis, Conflict, Violence and Trauma
  6. Urbanity and Urbanisation

The German Academic Exchange Service, the Max Weber Forum for South Asian Studies and ICAS:MP Metamorphosis of the Political thank all the experts, scholars and students involved.
